About the Event

We are delighted to announce that alumna Rumu Sarkar (‘81) has graciously offered to host us at her home to view and learn about her contemporary Indian art collection!

Have you ever wondered how people go about collecting art? Are you unsure how to start a collection of your own? Are you confused by what “curating art” really means?  Rumu will share her insights on these questions and her experiences in collecting art, including her discovery of an Indian art treasure in a used furniture store and her efforts to collect art from renowned Indian artists.  Rumu will also discuss the works in her collection, including pieces by Jamini Roy, S.H. Raza, Sakti Burman and Shanti Chandrasekar.

Rumu’s personal background has informed her journey through art and she will discuss why she decided to collect contemporary Indian art.  Rumu has reconnected with her cultural heritage and her family's past, including her father's experience of migrating to India (from what is now Bangladesh) during the Partition of India in 1947, and much later emigrating to the US with Rumu and her mother.

Rumu has curated an exhibition at a local DC art gallery, written art critiques for publication, and loaned one of her paintings to a local art exhibit.

This event promises to be a fascinating afternoon and will also feature Indian hors d'oeuvres from one of Rumu's favorite Indian restaurants!  We hope you will join us.

Rumu's home is located in the Kalorama Triangle/Adams Morgan area of DC.  It is a 15 minute walk from the Woodley Park redline metro station and street parking is available.   We will provide Rumu's address in a confirmation email sent to those individuals who register and pay for the event.
